Freedom School 12/2 Class Recaps

K-6 parents and students: We started our morning as a whole group, beginning to create a shared language for talking about prayer and God. In three groups (in the rain!) we explored three topics: articulating our understandings of God through metaphor (how is God a rock? how is God a shield? how is God a parent?); playing (literally - with silly putty) around with different names and features of God; connecting with the unity of God through the Shema prayer.

Later in the morning, the students built on their learning about the Shema by attending services twice to hear and pray both Shemas - the quiet, introspective prayer during the morning service and the raucous, joyful, call-and-response prayer at the start of the Torah service. Finally, we ended the morning by making a collective mosaic with our individual relationships with God, expressed through a paper-tear midrash process.
