Our Mission / יעד

We believe that Jewish religious practice can transform:
It can change lives, make meaning, and invest people in the world.

We’re a religious community, grounded in serious exploration of Jewish tradition, text, and ritual for people with all levels of Jewish knowledge and experience.

We see ourselves as translators. We want to connect Torah to today, heaven to earth. As such, we use every tool we can find: We combine elements of the unexpected, secular, and beautiful in the exploration of Jewish life.

We invite all kinds of people because this is who we are: all genders, ages, colors, sexual orientations, and backgrounds—members of modern families of one kind or another. We think who we are is our blessing.

We insist that Jewish practice and ideas be connected to the events of the day and our work in the world. We believe living a life of Torah means pursuing justice and fighting oppression in our communities — not only in words but in actions, sacrifices.

We know the challenges are great. But the prize is even greater: A religious community that has the power to transform and a collective power to do good.

We only hope to do what other generations have done before us: harness the power of Jewish life in our time.

1
Torah is the heart of everything we do. We translate it into the here and now through tools and experiences that foster intimacy, expression, and commitment.

2
We believe it’s not who you are but what you do. If you want to do Jewish, c’mon in.

3
The Kitchen pushes us to do what’s necessary to transform the world and ourselves.

We exist

to translate Torah by making religion modern and relevant1

with those who want to do Jewish2

in order to change lives and invest in the world3.

We wrote this handbook so you could understand why we do what we do and how we do it.

Consider it one part Kitchen story, one part explanation of our mission, and one part Kitchen culture decoder ring.
