High(er) Holiday 5782 Action List

So, you’re inspired by Rabbi Noa’s drash from Rosh Hashanah morning? You’ve been wondering what you could do in response to the climate crisis? For the past year, a group called the Kitchen Rainmakers has been doing just that. Below are real actions you can take from the comfort of your home. Our tip, don’t do it alone—talk with friends about your climate fears and acts of hope, and we’re ready to chat whenever you are.

5 Bid Actions For Climate Justice

  1. Sign The Rainmaker’s Declaration for Climate Change here

The Kitchen Rainmaker’s formed after Rabbi Noa’s Rosh Hashanah 5781 drash. Commit to engage by signing the declaration that started it all.

  2. Nudge our elected officials to focus on climate action

    • VOTE in the Sept 14 Gubernatorial Election.

    • Please call our US Senators every Friday and urge them to support bold climate action in Congress. Here is the information you need to become a Climate Champion.

  3. Electrify Everything or Clean It Up

Switch to cleaner electricity today! Through your energy provider, you can opt-up to receive all of your household electricity from 100% renewable resources for a (very) low increase in your monthly bill. The links below can also get you rebates to “go electric” too.

    • San Francisco residents, go to CleanPowerSF for SUPERGREEN 100% here

    • San Mateo County residents, go to Peninsula Clean Energy for ECO 100 here.

    • Marin/Contra Costa/Napa/Sonoma residents, go to MCE for DEEP GREEN here.

    • Alameda County residents, go to East Bay Community Energy here.

    • Santa Clara click here for Green Prime, and San Jose click here for Total Green.

  4. Conscious Consumption

Buy less, especially plastic, and think about the source of what you do buy. Kitchen-ites experimented in giving up plastic during Passover – think "chametz." See our guide to buying less and wasting less here. Don’t want to give up meat? Some of us are working towards consuming meat just two days fewer per week, while some are experimenting with MOSHaY (Meat On Shabbat and Yom Tov) while others are seasoned experts on a plant-based diet. We know that eating fewer animal products, especially meat (and especially beef), eating produce that is local, supporting farms that focus on regenerative agriculture, etc. are not only good eats, but are good for the planet.

  5. Put your money where your mouth is

Divest from companies and financial institutions that actively support climate chaos. Invest in portfolios, companies, projects that support green infrastructure, renewable energy, etc.

Kitchen-ites are gathering to navigate these new waters alongside each other. Reach out to Avital, The Kitchen’s Community Organizer, to join, talk, or explore.
