Passover Edition
If you thought Maqam was epic before, get ready for the Passover edition Hazzan Asher Levy is serving up. Through an interactive workshop you will explore musical Passover traditions from across the world – Morroco, Poland, Turkeym Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Uzbekistan to name a few – that you can bring home to your own seder table.
We’ll be using rousing melodies to tell the story of Passover for the key seder moments in a range of Jewish traditions and Hallel melodies that express the joy of liberations. Join us and lift up your seder with the beauty, energy, and joy of music.
More about Maqam
Maqam, meaning “place” in Arabic (like the Hebrew word, “maqom”), maqam is a system of melodic modes which is the foundation of Arabic, Turkish and many other musical traditions.
In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the maqamat have deep spiritual meaning. Every Torah portion, holiday and lifecycle event has an associated maqam that musically encapsulates the emotion of the moment. So, beginning in September / Elul and over the course of the year, we'll sing through this cycle, following our calendar, and learning a ton of rich and incredible melodies together. We’ll be adding these melodies to our shabbatot throughout the year, too.
This workshop is for literally everyone and anyone who likes to sing and learn.
Mostly every other Tuesday* at 7 PM (check the calendar). Questions? Email Asher at asher@thekitchensf.org
