Maqam with Hazzan Asher Shasho Levy

Maqam, meaning “place” in Arabic (like the Hebrew word, “maqom”), maqam is a system of melodic modes which is the foundation of Arabic, Turkish and many other musical traditions.

In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the maqamat have deep spiritual meaning. Every Torah portion, holiday and lifecycle event has an associated maqam that musically encapsulates the emotion of the moment. So, beginning in September / Elul and over the course of the year, we'll sing through this cycle, following our calendar, and learning a ton of rich and incredible melodies together. We’ll be adding these melodies to our shabbatot throughout the year, too.

This workshop is for literally everyone and anyone who likes to sing and learn.

Mostly every other Tuesday* at 7 PM (check the calendar).  Questions? Email Asher at asher@thekitchensf.org
